From when time started till time will cease, man has always been interested in his own human past. Through the eyes of our ancestors, we get a glimpse into a window of the past. This past teaches us about what went wrong, what went right, how the system of things worked, such as government and society. These relics—nowadays collector’s items sometimes worth thousands of dollars—are literally priceless apertures to a much larger and grandeur picture. Archeologists today have unearthed some of histories greatest finds; some are well- and lesser-known artifacts.
Other great antiquity finds through history include a much broader spectrum of artifacts that are just as neat if not just as important. Antiquities found in Europe, the Middle East and the Americas include pottery, vases, weapons, pins, bows, money, crossbows, capes, cloaks and ceramics. Just a few months ago, in fact, a 2,000-year-old earring was found in a parking lot. Made of pearl, emerald and gold, the artifact is the first of its kind to hone clues of antiquity. Pieces such as these tell a broad story of how the elite dressed, behaved and traveled. A piece such as this is infinitely priceless when it suddenly begins to tell about our forebears.
Barter was used in ancient Rome, and often used in tax collection, Rome had a very developed coinage system, with brass, bronze, and precious metal coins in circulation throughout the Empire and beyond—some have even been discovered in India. Before the 3rd century BC, copper was traded by weight, measured in unmarked lumps, across central Italy. The original copper coins (as) had a face value of one Roman pound of copper, but weighed less. Thus, Roman money's utility as a unit of exchange consistently exceeded its intrinsic value as metal. After Nero began debasing the silver denarius, its legal value was an estimated one-third greater than its intrinsic.
